SOME TIPS ON IMPROVING YOUR LISTENING COMPREHENSION

English, as any other languages, uses a number of sounds to build up its pronunciation, or spoken, system. These sounds may be partly or totally different from those of our language. The English sounds that are the same or similar to those of our language do not usually create a big problem for us. Sounds that are quite different will potentially create problems.

In order to be able to pronounce all the English sounds correctly, you should understand how each sound is created or produced in the vocal organ (i.e. in our mouth) and how they differ from (or similar to) the available sounds of our language. You should also learn how similar or different it is between larger sound units (such as syllables, words or phrases) in your language and those in English.

The basic key to success in learning the spoken system of a target (second or foreign) language seems to lie in a sufficient mastery of the sounds that make up the target language and in a sufficient understanding of how they are combined to form larger units of sounds.

In order to see how complex learning English is, watch this video where the presenter (Mino) from Anglo-Link.com tells us why English native speakers are sometimes difficult to understand and she also shows some tips on how to improve our listening comprehension.

As you watch the video, make a note about the presentation. It is alright if you do not understand every word that Mino says. The most important thing is that you get the main idea of her talk. Using the information you got from watching the video, then, try to improve your listening skills as much as possible.
